    Azalea, Rhododendron Genus Details

There are approximately 800 species belonging to the Ericaceae (heath) family. Most are small, evergreen shrubs to small trees with leaves that are 3-6" long and 1 1/2-2 1/2" wide. The leaves are shiny above and whitish underneath. Flowers vary in color because of hybrid availability but the most common flower color is purple. The plants bloom in late spring to early summer and the fruit is an egg shaped capsule which matures in late summer.
